The Spartan Dominion has an IRC channel (chatroom) that many of our members make use of; it allows us to have discussions in real-time, which is more personal than on the forums. If you know how to use IRC, just meet us on DALnet (irc.dal.net) in the channel #SpartanDominion.

If you don't know how to use IRC, read the information below:

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, and it's used to allow chatroom-style discussions over the internet. To use IRC, the first thing you need is an IRC client. The most commonly used of these is called mIRC, which is free to download and use as a free trial for 30 days. However, I've recently taken a liking to Chatzilla which is a completely free (non-trial) extension for Mozilla Firefox. You can find an almost-full list of clients on Wikipedia here.

There are many different irc servers out there; the one we use is called DALnet (irc.dal.net). On each server are lots of different channels; the names of these contain no spaces and always start with a pound sign (#). The channel we use is called #SpartanDominion.

Once you've installed your client and connected, you can send the IRC server various commands, all of which begin with a forward slash (/). For example, typing /nick Tru7h would change my username (or "nick") to Tru7h. If I typed / me yawns, it'd show up to other users as <Tru7h yawns>. It's a good idea to get familiar with these commands. You can display a list of them by typing /commands.

To connect to a server, just type /connect [server name]. For example, to join the SD chat, you'd type /connect irc.dal.net followed by /join #SpartanDominion. If you're using ChatZilla or another browser-based client, you could just type irc://irc.dal.net/spartandominion into your browser.

Private messaging is also a good skill to have. To PM any member in chat, just type /msg [username] [your message].

Channel operators (or "ops") are the admins of seperate channels and control the entire channel. They can boot, ban, promote, or silence anybody else in the chatroom. You can tell who the operators are because the icon beside their name will be different, or they will show up with an @ (for example, if I were channel op I'd show up as @Tru7h instead of just Tru7h).

Finally, you'll notice that the SD channel has a bunch of channel modes listed somewhere (it'll look something like +tnmlj 50 5:10). I'll explain the common ones you'll find:

  • +t means only channel operators can change the topic.
  • +n means messages will not be accepted into the channel from a different channel.
  • +j, followed by something like N:S, means only N amount of users can join the channel within S seconds. This prevents channel flooding.
  • +l, followed by an integer X, means that X amount of users total can be in the channel at once. This also helps prevent flooding.
  • +m means the channel is moderated. Only people with voice (+v) will be able to send any text at all. You acquire voice by having a channel op give it to you. This is only used in rare occasions.
This is just a very basic overview, but should be enough to get you started. Send me a message if you have any questions.

You can learn more about Internet Relay Chat by visiting the Wikipedia article.

Notice: These chats are available for public viewing. A list of archived chat logs is included in the below post.

Notice:There is now a Java applet available on the SD Directory that allows you to connect to the IRC channel without having to install a client. You can find that here. It's sketchy, though, so you might be better off just getting an actual IRC client.

New: You can see realtime channel statistics here.

New: #SpartanDominion is now moderated by an IRC version of SD Bot. Read below:

The bot is capable of granting people operator and "voice" status, which makes channel management easier. It will also greet people to the channel and perform other administrative tasks. Furthermore, it is capable of recognizing and responding to a few commands.

It's relatively simple right now so don't expect it to have a crazy amount of functionalities, but it can still do a few things and more will be added as soon as I get a chance. Here's a list of valid commands:

  • .info - Sends you a message containing general information about the bot.
  • .time - Shows the current server time.
  • .date - Shows the current server date.
  • .uptime - Shows how long the bot's been online.
  • .ping - Shows your current network latency.
  • .google <search string> - Performs a Google Search and returns the most likely result.
  • .8ball <question> - Responds to "yes or no" questions using randomized responses, like a magic 8-ball.
  • .bar - Messages you a list of "bartender" functions.
  • .poke <user> - Pokes another user.
  • .slap <user> - Slaps another user with a random object.
  • .random - Initializes the randomizer. This will make the bot say random things every 30 minutes.
  • .randomoff - Disables the randomizer.
Also note that you can use these commands by typing /msg SD_Bot <command> without the period in front.

I'm trying to think of ideas for new additions, so if you come up with any suggestions, feel free to post them!
